Black Lives Matter has been a focus of global attention this week (June 2020). While reporting on events in the US, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander journalists and broadcasters are also drawing correlations with Aboriginal deaths in custody in Australia and the need for action here.

This is distressing and difficult work for reporters and for our communities. To help support our members through this moment, First Nations Media Australia invited Stan Grant to provide guidance on advice on reporting on trauma on Friday 5 June, 2020.

Stan is a Wiradjuri man and one of Australia's most respected and awarded journalists. He has more than 30 years experience in radio, print and television news and current affairs reporting which included 10 years as a Senior International Correspondent for CNN in the Middle East and Asia. Stan is currently the ABC's Indigenous and International Affairs Analyst, a Professor of Global Affairs at Griffith University, Principal Presenter with Al Jazeera English, and ambassador of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF). Stan has significant experience in reporting on traumatic events.

In this webinar and Q&A, Stan shared his own story and experiences, and gave advice about how to look after ourselves (emotionally and physically) and how we can best navigate the impact our reporting has on our communities.

The conversation includes some difficult content. If you are seeking support for yourself or for someone else, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or EASA (NT) or Indigenous Psychological Services (WA).
