Proudly celebrating 16 years on the airwaves, Beyond the Bars give voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates as Australia’s only live prison radio broadcasts.

Produced by 3CR, in 2017 Beyond the Bars features stories, songs, opinions and poems from men and women from six Victorian Prisons. The all-black radio broadcast team present workshops in the lead up to the NAIDOC Week broadcasts.  The broadcasts seek to foster hope by providing a voice to those who are incarcerated.

Excerpts from the two pre-recorded prison broadcasts at Fulham Correctional Centre (near Sale, Gippsland) and Middleton Prison (Castlemaine) are available via the Community Radio Network for your station to broadcast during NAIDOC week.

Part 1 (16'46)

Opening of the broadcast, presenters Johnny Mac, bryan, Gary, Blak Betty and Kutcha speak with Norm about family, the difference between life inside and out and with Chris about football.

Part 2 (17'27)

Presenters Johnny Mac, bryan, Gary, Blak Betty and Kutcha speak with Andrew, Mike and Josh about their home country, finding family connections, their children and sports.

Part 3 (15'25)

Presenters Johnny Mac and Blak Betty and Kutcha in conversation with James at about his home country in the Grampians, genetic memory,  understanding the significance of your experiences, relationships, overcoming intergenerational trauma and the meaning of NAIDOC week.

Part 1 (17'34)

Opening of the broadcast with didjeridoo and welcome to country. Beyond the Bars presenter Kutcha in conversation with Brian and Bear about the stolen generation, the Murumali program & NAIDOC week.

Part 2 (16'39)

Presenters bryan and Dylan speak with Geoff and Syd.  Cheerios, NAIDOC week, hobbies and education, Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) and a song.

Part 3 (15'38)

Presenters bryan, Blak Betty and Sarah speak with Brian and Nigel and other inmates about the Murramali program, playing didjeridoo, music and artwork.
