The Story of Our Children and Young People (the Story) is a series of reports that provide a comprehensive picture of the wellbeing of Northern Territory children and young people. It includes data, at regional level, against key indicators of the wellbeing of children and young people. It also contains positive stories of activities that support the development and cultural identity of children and young people.

The Story was a recommendation from the Expert Reference Panel for the development of the NT Government Early Childhood Development plan, Starting Early for a Better Future. The NT Government accepted the recommendation and committed to the production of an updated Story every two years.

The Story is framed using the Australian Research Alliance for Child and Youth (ARACY) wellbeing framework referred to as The Nest. The Nest’s six outcome areas, or domains, have been developed through consultation across the country. The domains are being valued, loved and safe; having material basics; being healthy; learning; participating; and having a positive sense of identity and culture. The Story lays the foundation for planning and actions to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.

The Story was prepared by the CCDE, under the direction of an independent Editorial Committee and in partnership with the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet. The first Story was published in November 2019, and the second Story in October 2021. In 2021 the Story was extended to include an interactive data platform which allows users to develop their own graphs and tables containing regional and sub-regional information. The data platform is publicly available through the website for the Northern Territory Government Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet  (https://cmc.nt.gov.au/children/story-of-our-children-and-young-people).
