RIBS Introduction to Radio Broadcasting

Fresh from Walking with Spirits, the TEABBA Crew unpacked the truck ready for another trip out to community. This time it was across the beautiful floodplains, wetlands and amazing rock country down the dusty road to Maningrida.

Bernard Namok Jnr (Bala B) and Matty delivered RIBS Introduction to Radio Broadcasting training  to local man, Hamish Garuwulgu.  Hamish was shown the switcher, radio studio equipment, playout system and was given a brief session on how to do a local live to air show. TEABBA went live to air locally and across the networks for an hour with stories from the trip to Maningrida, awesome tunes and spoke with young locals from the community on the show.

TEABBA Radio would like to welcome Hamish Garuwulgu to the team.

When in Maningrida, tune into your local voice in the bush, Hamish and all the wonderful music on 106.1fm.
Lions take 2017 Maningrida AFL Premiership

GAME DAY! While the TEABBA Crew was in Maningrida, Bernard Namok Jnr (Bala B) and Matty together with Hamish broadcasted the local Maningrida AFL Grand Final game between the Seagulls and Lions.

Before the main event the community enjoyed games played throughout the day by women, kids and the Maningrida All Stars and Ramingining. Throughout the day there was a live band, fresh seafood and activities organised by Babbarra Women’s Centre. The main match began with the two teams linking arms together with the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Michael Gunner, ‘Anti-Violence Campaigner ‘No More’ Charlie King (ABC Darwin Sports Broadcaster), referees and the local men in the community to stand in solidarity and say, ‘NO MORE’ to domestic violence.

TEABBA Broadcaster Matty, did an excellent job calling the Grand Final while Bala B took to the panel in the air-conditioned TEABBA Outside Broadcast Truck ‘Ms Jedda’ and organised on-air interviews. Jacky Pascoe the Chairman of Maningrida Football League was interviewed. This will be his last year in this position after being in the role for six years. He said “I really enjoyed my time as the Maningrida Football League Chairman and now it is time to pass the role onto someone new”

It was an awesome game of strong footy as both teams showed pure talent. A big congratulations to the Lion’s – 2017 AFL Maningrida Premiers and well done to the Seagulls on a fantastic season.
WADEYE FESTIVAL

This year the Wadeye Festival broadcast was hosted by Wadeye locals, Martina Kinthari and Patrick Jongmin. They both did an amazing job broadcasting in both language and english which meant DJB and Matty from TEABBA had a chance to explore the festival and keep a close eye on the footy scores!

There were a lot of interesting things happening at this years festival but the highlight was definitely the Recycled Art Competition which saw competitors create art out of items that would have normally ended up at the rubbish tip. The football was another show of the communities talent with games being played between the Wadeye Dockers, Demons, Cats and Peppimenarti Bulldogs.

The OB hosted by Patrick and Martina was one of the many reasons the couple won 'Best Emerging Talent' for the Top End at this years Remote Indigenous Media Festival.

The Wadeye Festival is an amazing event on the Territory calendar and TEABBA was pleased to be a part of it.
10th Anniversary of the CATSI Act
TEABBA staff along with broadcasting and training truck “Ms Jedda” attended the 10th Anniversary of the CATSI(Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act on the lawns of the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT. Many dignitaries and Indigenous organisations attending including the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr Nigel Scullion.

The Registrar of Indigenous Corporations Mr Anthony Bevan spoke about the CATSI Act, why it was written and how it has been positive for many organisations. Minister Nigel Scullion explained that ORIC is working very well and spoke about how Indigenous organisations are ahead of mainstream organisations, by the way that they are going about business.

After all the official business, the crowd was entertained by  “Mary G” Queen of the Kimberley’s. They were then treated to some spectacular cultural music and dancing from the “One Mob Dancers”.  It was a great day of celebration.

TEABBA management attended the technical review of the CATSI Act in Cairns recently. There were quite a few organisations who had different views on the possible upcoming changes and it was good to hear everyones thoughts. It is expected there will be a draft of the technical changes in the near future.

TECH SPOT

TEABBA tech team Kyle Doevendans and Mick Cummings travelled to Borroloola in September to replace a faulty transmitter and complete works including removing old analogue TV antennas off the mast. Kyle has recently completed his rigging courses and this was his first climb up the mast. The old TV antennas were removed with all the old cabling ensuring no debris could fall off the mast during the cyclone season.

Thanks to these upgrades TEABBA can now be heard up to 100 kilometres outside of Borroloola

Make sure you tune into 102.9FM if you are in Borroloola to listen to Val's show or catch her in the morning from 6:30AM-8:30AM on the TEABBA network, on channel 921 on your VAST or via live stream on www.teabba.com.au
KALKARINDJI FREEDOM DAY

The communities of Dagaragu and Kalkaridgi hold a special place in Australian history. They are where the birth of Indigenous land rights all began. Thanks to the will and determination of a great man by the name of Vincent Lingiari. He was a part of the inequality and he saw his people suffer. Vincent Lingiari said "enough is enough" and lead a walk off in protest to their working conditions. This would later become known as the Wave Hill Walk off. After a ten year long struggle they were finally given back their homeland.

The month of August is the time the communities come together to celebrate this historic and special occasion, the 51st Anniversary of the Freedom Day Festival. Joining in the festivities was TEABBA Broadcaster Brendon Barlow (DJ B) who made the trek out along the Buntine Highway, through amazing country to the spiritual home of the Gurindgi people. DJ B joined other community members in the Freedom Day march from the town centre to a sacred place down by the Victoria River.  Other activities included basketball and football competitions and ended with an evening concert which featured an amazing  line up of great indigenous bands. TEABBA Radio was pleased to be invited to such a historical event.
Cathy Freeman Foundation visits TEABBA

TEABBA was proud to host a bunch of students from two Top End communities recently that took part in a tour of our radio broadcasting facilities, recorded some station promos and came in to the studio to have a chat live on air with our broadcasters.

The visit was organsied by the Cathy Freeman Foundation, a program that helps broaden horizons and inspire Indigenous students to experience their full potential in school and with a vision to ensure that Indigenous and non-Indigenous children have the same education standards and opportunities in life.

TEABBA conducts many of these types of tours and activities for school organisations and we look forward to each and every visit.
The Numburindi Festival

TEABBA crew attended Numbulwar's second annual Numburindi Festival. Bernard Namok Jnr ‘Bala B’ and Toby Short travelled the ten hour trip to Numbulwar from Darwin. The festival was held close to the community with a backdrop of amazing ocean views. The crew captured all the highlights over the festival period including live music from local clans, traditional songs and dance.
Walking With Spirits at Beswick Falls 2017

As the sun set across Beswick Falls, hundreds were gathered on the white sand ready for a night of amazing music.

Walking with Spirits was held over two days in July, in the community of Beswick (Wugularr) which is on the Central Arnhem Highway. The TEABBA Crew, Bernard Namok Jnr (Bala B) and Brendon Barlow (DJ B) travelled down in Ms Jedda.

The crew met with Ronald Weetra, Beswick RIBS Broadcaster and Paddie Madden from Barunga RIBS to broadcast live from Djilpin Arts and gather materials from Beswick Falls.

The highlights included all the traditional songs from North East Arnhem Land and the wonderful drumming and singing from ‘Rako Pasefika’ which are made up of singers and dancers from Rotuman and Tongan.
